Last week, I was at Disneyland in California. I love Disney, whether it’s World in Florida or Land in California. There’s just something so magical about it. Something that makes it special every time I visit. Maybe it’s the huge castle and the way it transports me to a fantasy world. Maybe it’s the escape from my normal life. Whatever it is, it’s magical.
So, you might ask, how does this relate to writing? Well, think about your favorite books. What is it about those books that make them keepers for you? Characters? Almost definitely. Plot? Most likely. Conflict? Assuredly. But there is also that something extra. That something that is almost magical that can transport you out of your life and put you smack in the center of the book’s world.
Not every book has this magic. Just like not every amusement park has the magic. I think part of it has to do with the reader. Personal preferences. Experiences. Even whether they are having a good day or a bad day. All of these go into creating just the right amount of belief. And isn’t that what magic is all about? Belief?
Tell me what book has that special magic for you?
